China, in a bid to restore confidence after last month’s brutal suppression of the pro-democracy movement in Beijing, said Saturday that it will not seek retribution against Hong Kong residents who protested against the crackdown.

The reassurance came from Xu Jiatun, China’s de facto ambassador to Hong Kong, at a meeting with Hong Kong and Macao leaders.

Beijing also invited a group of influential Hong Kong citizens to meet with new Communist Party chief Jiang Zemin and discuss relations between China and the British colony, which reverts to Chinese rule in 1997.
