Longtime classical music station KFAC-FM will broadcast portions of a Rolling Stones press conference at noon today, fueling rumors that the station may change formats to album-oriented rock. (Two other local rock stations, KLOS and KLSX, also will carry the conference, during which the rock group will announce its touring schedule.) Some sources view KFAC-FM’s airing of the Stones press conference as “a test drive” to determine reaction to a format change. Several station employees report being told by management that the classical station--which was bought by Dallas-based Evergreen Media Corp. in January for $55 million--will likely change formats in September. General Manager Jim de Castro reportedly told employees that KFAC would change formats after KFAC Day at the Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 5. However, in a recent telephone interview, De Castro said he was “researching the market” to determine the most effective format. “We’re taking a look at different options and classical is one of them. . . . If and when it becomes prudent to make a change, then we will. If we can make classical work and make it salable, then we’re going to stay classical. There’s too much history with this radio station.” Industry observers speculate that the debt incurred by the station may force the move to another format. Classical stations traditionally have small audiences. The amount paid for the station, which has one of the strongest signals in Southern California, was the highest ever paid for a classical radio station.
