A Taiwanese journalist was released and deported from China after being held eight days for alleged contact with a pro-democracy movement student leader. Peter Huang--whose Chinese name is Huang Teh-pei--later said in Hong Kong that he believes Chinese authorities have arrested the student, Wang Dan. Wang’s whereabouts have been unclear since he met with the reporter on July 2, but there have been unconfirmed reports of his arrest. Huang, a reporter for Taiwan’s Independence Evening Post, said officials of the Beijing Municipal State Security Bureau provided information known only to him and Wang, thus convincing him that the student had been seized.
