Israel has deployed U.S.-made Hawk surface-to-air missiles in a border strip it occupies in southern Lebanon, independent security sources in Tyre, Lebanon, said. They said a battery of missiles was installed at an Israeli army base in Israel’s self-declared “security zone” a few days ago. Reports on the deployment coincided with a crisis in the country over Soviet-made Frog-7 surface-to-surface missiles reported to have been acquired by mainly Christian army units. Syria has demanded the withdrawal of the missiles sent by Iraq, the main foreign backer of Christian army chief Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun, as a condition for lifting its sea blockade of Beirut’s Christian enclave.
