THE SIDELINES : 3 Defectors Arrive in W. Germany
Three East German soccer players who defected from their team in Sweden have arrived in West Germany, the Bild newspaper said today.
The three reported to the West German consulate in Goteborg on Wednesday and were put on a ship that took them to the West German port of Kiel, the newspaper said. They arrived Thursday, and Bild printed a photograph of the three walking from the vessel.
Bild identified them as Jens Koenig, 24; Andre Koehler, 24, and Thomas Weiss, 21. The report said the three hope to continue their careers in West Germany.
They defected hours before their East German first-division team, Wismut Aue, played Orgryte IF of Sweden in a Toto Cup match.
