An elementary school principal who urged the school board to fire him rather than cut any of the teachers in this financially pressed school district was out of a job Friday.

Some of the board members had tears in their eyes as they voted unanimously Thursday night to lay off Norman Najimy, who had taught for 37 years.

“This was the shortest and saddest meeting in our history,” board member Donna Slowick said after the 20-minute session.
