Tennis Roundup : Agassi Is Ousted by Gomez in U.S. Pro Championships

Top-seeded Andre Agassi was upset in the semifinals of the $415,000 U.S. Pro Tennis Championships Saturday night at Brookline, Mass., losing to Andres Gomez, 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (7-3), 6-2.

Agassi, 19 and ranked fourth in the world, lost for the second time in three matches against Gomez, an Ecuadorean ranked 27th.

Gomez will meet Mats Wilander in tonight’s final. Wilander beat Martin Jaite, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Sixth-seeded Peter Lundgren of Sweden won two matches and advanced to the final of the $160,000 Volvo Hall of Fame tennis tournament at Newport, R.I.

Lundgren defeated third-seeded John Fitzgerald of Australia, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), in a morning match that had been suspended Friday with Lundgren leading, 5-4.

After a 2 1/2-hour break, Lundgren came back to beat Glenn Layendecker, 6-3, 6-4.

Lundgren will play unseeded Jim Pugh, a 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 6-3 winner over Danie Visser of South Africa.

Top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina downed Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the final of the $250,000 Gunze World tournament at Osaka, Japan.

In today’s final, Sabatini will play Mary Joe Fernandez, who beat Nana Miyagi of Japan, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Eighth-seeded Carl-Uwe Steeb of West Germany advanced to the final of the $305,000 Swiss Open with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Sergi Bruguera of Spain at Gstaad.

In today’s title match, Steeb will play unseeded Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden, who beat countryman Jan Gunnarsson, 6-4, 6-2.
