Airborne troops killed 22 leftist guerrillas in two sweeps in central Peru, the government reported over the weekend.

Troops killed 17 rebels in the Upper Huallaga River valley and five more in the nearby Andean foothills on Friday, a Defense Ministry statement said. Both areas produce cocaine.

The troops, using helicopters, captured weapons, medicines and radio equipment, the statement said. It did not specify if the rebels belonged to the Maoist Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) or the rival, pro-Cuban Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement.
