Top-seeded Zina Garrison defeated Lisa Albano, 6-1, 6-1, and second-seeded Pam Shriver stopped Anne Henricksson, 6-3, 6-2, Tuesday in the first round of a $200,000 Virginia Slims women’s tournament at Newport, R.I.
Defending champion Lori McNeil, seeded third, beat Wendy White, 6-4, 7-5.
Fourth-seeded Patty Fendick was upset by Hu Na, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, and fifth-seeded Amy Frazier lost to Michelle Jaggard, 6-1, 6-2.
Others advancing were No. 6 Ros Fairbank, No. 7 Gretchen Magers and No. 8 Gigi Fernandez.
Second-seeded Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia defeated Marie-Christine Damas of France, 6-4, 6-4, in her first-round match of the women’s Belgian Open tournament at Brussels.
In another opening-round match, Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria upset fifth-seeded Niege Dias of Brazil, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Dias is ranked 58th in the world. The youngest of the Maleeva sisters is ranked 289th.
