Lynwood : $50,000 State Grant Sought for Tree-Planting Project

Lynwood may plant about 600 trees next year if a $50,000 grant is approved by the state.

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the submission of an application to the state’s urban forestry program, which provides more than $5 million to municipalities for tree planting projects.

If the grant is approved, the money will be used to replace trees that were removed because their roots were causing major damage to sidewalks, said Joe Wang, director of public works.

Trees with small roots, such as the flowering plum and Chinese silk floss, will be purchased, Wang said.

During the last several years, Lynwood has removed about 30 trees a year that were uprooting sidewalks, he said.
