The Message of ‘Do the Right Thing’

Re “The Evolution of Spike Lee,” by Sheila Benson, July 9:

By reading James Baldwin, I’ve learned that nothing can go unchallenged; especially the feverish industry that is dedicated to defining who and what the American Negro is. And Spike Lee challenges with truth, reality and depth.

Many Americans don’t know what Spike Lee is saying in his film “Do the Right Thing” because they don’t want to know--because reality scares America. These individuals still view black perspectives and life as essentially nonhuman.
