Farmer-Patrick Sets Another U.S. Women’s Record in 400 Hurdles

Sandra Farmer-Patrick broke her U.S. record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, and Carl Lewis extended his winning streak in the long jump to 61 meets Saturday at the inaugural New York Track and Field Games.

Farmer-Patrick, a former Jamaican who became a U.S. citizen last year, was timed in 53.37 seconds, breaking the mark of 53.75 she set June 17 at Houston. It was the fastest time in the world this year and sixth-fastest ever. The world record is 52.94, held by Marina Stepanova of the Soviet Union.

Schowanda Williams finished second, and double Olympic champion Jackie Joyner-Kersee was third.

Lewis, unbeaten in the long jump since the 1981 national indoor championships and a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the event, equaled his best jump of the year at 28 feet 0 1/4 inch. Mike Conley, the 1985 World Cup champion, was fifth at 25-4 3/4.

Two-time Olympic champion Roger Kingdom won the 110-meter hurdles, and Steve Lewis, Olympic 400-meter gold medalist, cruised to victory over bronze medalist Danny Everett in 44.47.

Dawn Sowell suffered a hamstring injury in the 100 meters.
