Inglewood police shot and wounded a man when he allegedly tried to run down an officer at the end of a three-mile chase, authorities said Sunday.

The man, identified as Cephus Earl Sudduth Jr., 19, of Los Angeles, was pursued Saturday evening by police who said his green Cadillac matched the description of a car involved in a hit-and-run accident that left one person with minor injuries.

Cornered Near Race Track

Police finally cornered Sudduth near Hollywood Park race track, but instead of surrendering, he accelerated toward the officers, authorities said. Several officers fired at him, striking him in his right side. Sudduth lost control of the car and slammed into a brick wall.

He was in satisfactory condition at County-USC Medical Center jail ward, where he was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, evading arrest, reckless driving and felony hit-and-run driving.

It was the second shooting in two nights involving Inglewood police. Late Friday, police shot and killed a paroled burglar, Christopher Grant, 34, during a pursuit in which his car reportedly dragged an officer for 25 feet.
