Los Angeles police officially estimated that 210,000 people attended the Aviation Expo ’89 air show at Van Nuys Airport on Saturday and Sunday.

“The crowds were tremendous,” said airport spokesman Robert Hayes. “We’re in the process of building something here. We want it to be the biggest event in the Valley every year.”

The two-day event included an exhibition of World War II fighter planes, a display of more than 50 modern aircraft, and awards for flyers and engineers who contributed to San Fernando Valley aviation history.

Hayes said sales at concession stands during the event totaled $94,000, a 10% increase from last year. Half the profit will go to a private concessionaire; the remainder will be split among a dozen community organizations that contributed volunteers to the expo, such as Rotary clubs in Van Nuys and the 99s, a club for women pilots, he said.
