An elderly man was fatally injured in a traffic accident on La Paz Road on Tuesday. His car was hit broadside by a van as he tried to make an illegal turn, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.
Wilbur R. Appleman, 83, a resident of Leisure World in Laguna Hills, died Tuesday night at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, about eight hours after the 11 a.m. accident, CHP Officer Tom Sollie said.
Appleman was trying to make a left turn out of a supermarket parking lot onto La Paz Road, east of Moulton Parkway, when his car was struck by a van traveling about 40 m.p.h., Sollie said. The impact pushed Appleman’s car across four lanes of the road and over a curb.
Appleman’s left turn was illegal because it was across two double yellow lines, Sollie said.
