Saudi financier Adnan Khashoggi left federal custody in a limousine today after his lawyer posted $10-million bail in an arrangement approved by an appeals judge over prosecutors’ objections.

“I am pleased that the courts have granted me bail,” Khashoggi said, reading a handwritten statement outside the courthouse in Manhattan where his lawyer gave a clerk two bank checks for $5 million each. “I am anxious to work for my defense and look forward to clearing my name at trial.”

Khashoggi, 54, will be allowed to live in his luxury apartment on 5th Avenue, but he is required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Judge Lawrence W. Pierce of the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a stay on the release that had been in effect while he reviewed the bail set by U.S. District Judge John Keenan earlier this week.

During a hearing before Keenan, Khashoggi said, “I want to assure your honor that I will abide because I cherish the relationship with America.”
