Coach Joe Haering of the Arena Football League’s Pittsburgh Gladiators apologized for knocking down league Commissioner Jim Foster with a punch to the jaw, and asked to be reinstated as coach.

“I think Joe has taken an initial step in the right direction,” said Ray Jauch, league operations manager who suspended Haering.

Jauch said, however, that he does not expect to resolve the case in time for tonight’s game between the Gladiators and the Detroit Drive in Richfield, Ohio.
