WHITE LION “Big Game.” Atlantic ***

The song “When the Children Cry” from White Lion’s debut album “Pride” may have earned these hard rockers a reputation for wimpiness, but many songs on this second LP offer something a bit meatier. The quartet jumps from style to style in its pleasant way, from the blues of “Dirty Woman” to the metallic strains of “If My Mind Is Evil” to “Broken Home,” the inevitable ballad, showing an inner strength underneath the melodiousness. Guitarist Vito Bratta’s emotive playing never overwhelms the songs, and Mike Tramp’s sweet but ragged vocals add character to the simple, effective melody lines.
