Pyramid Is a Hot Spot for Bass

Largemouth bass fishing is slow at many Southland reservoirs, but at Pyramid Lake in northwestern Los Angeles County the action has increased dramatically, with many fishermen catching 10 to 12 fish a day, according to a lake spokeswoman.

Santa Barbara’s Ardas Khalsa caught an even dozen, all on nightcrawlers and most weighing upward of five pounds.

WILLOW BEACH--Striped bass biting downriver, most between eight and 15 pounds. Surface lures working best. Trout picking up, biting best upriver.

LAKE MEAD--Striped bass biting primarily at Vegas Wash, Saddle Island, Lake Mead Marina and Stewart’s Point. Anchovies best bet. Surface action best at dawn. Catfish small but plentiful, biting throughout lake on mackerel at about 25 feet.

LAKE HAVASU--Striped bass small but plentiful, biting primarily at south end. Anchovies best bet. Catfish bite consistent, most weighing about three pounds. Largemouth bass slow.

BULLHEAD CITY--Trout to three pounds biting in river. Some limits. Power Bait best bet. Striped bass fishing spotty, best near dam. Anchovies best bet. Catfish good in lake and river, averaging two-four pounds.

SALTON SEA--Orangemouth corvina biting best at Red Hill. Some taken from jetties. Live bait best bet. Flathead catfish biting on goldfish at Alamo River.

LAKE CACHUMA--Catfish biting best on mackerel at end and B area. Trout fishing best along north shoreline, with trollers using six-eight colors and needlefish doing best. Largemouth bass fishing best in mornings on surface along east shoreline.

LAKE CASITAS--Catfish biting throughout lake, primarily in shallows near weeds. Mackerel best bet. Randy Miller, Chatsworth, 12-pound catfish. Leonard Gibson, Oakview, five catfish, 46 pounds. Trout bite good at 45 feet. Trollers using eight-nine colors and needlefish lures doing best. Several limits. Brad Linschied, Ventura, five trout, 12 pounds. Largemouth bass slow.

PYRAMID LAKE--Largemouth bass bite excellent, with some anglers catching 10-12 fish. Yellow Bar and Tin Cup best areas. Averaging five-12 pounds. Catfish biting best at dam and marina, averaging 3 1/2-8 1/2 pounds. Ken Ordens, Palmdale, 6 1/2-pound catfish. Striped bass boiling in marina, but few biting.

LAKE PIRU--Trout bite is fair to good. Trollers using 10 colors and needlefish lures. Catfish biting throughout lake. Mackerel best bet. Largemouth bass slow, best near rocks and off points in mornings and afternoons.

CASTAIC LAKE--Catfish biting best at evenings and night on lower lake. Mackerel or anchovies working. Gary Barker, Sunland, 15 1/2-pound catfish. Largemouth bass biting throughout day, with nightcrawlers and blue plastic worms working best. Brice Porter, Castaic, 8 3/4-pound bass, caught at lower lake. Bluegills biting primarily on meal worms.

LAKE ISABELLA--Largemouth bass bite strong at Rocky and Piney points and South Fork. Crawfish best bet. Catfish bite consistent throughout lake. Mackerel best bet.

IRVINE LAKE--Catfish providing most action, biting best near dam and at Santiago Flats. Mackerel best bet. Norman Shockley, Costa Mesa, 12 1/4-pound catfish. Lisa Hovde, Santa Ana, 10 1/2-pound catfish. Crappie biting mainly at dam on mini-jigs and red worms. Trout biting in deep water at Sierra Cove. Largemouth bass fair, biting near docks and dam.

LAKE SKINNER--Catfish averaging five pounds biting throughout lake. Mackerel and shrimp working. Alvin Cormer, Gardena, 11-pound catfish, caught at northeast corner. Walt Posey, Villa Park, 10 1/2-pound catfish. Bluegills biting in shaded areas close to shore. Mini-jigs best bet.

BIG BEAR--Trout slow, biting best at 20 feet, averaging 12 inches. Largemouth bass active in mornings and evenings, biting off points and dropoffs. Catfish averaging about three pounds, biting throughout lake.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Striped bass biting in channel, Cleghorn and Miller canyons. Surface lures producing fish upward of 20 pounds. Crappie bite excellent.

BISHOP AREA--Crowley: Weather hot; fishing slow. Owens River: Fishing fair with fly fishermen getting best results. Sabrina: Slow, with nightcrawlers and Power Bait offering best chance. Bishop Creek: Slow, with salmon eggs working best. South Lake: Trollers using Power Bait doing best for stocked rainbows.

JUNE LAKE AREA--Occasional brood stock to five pounds at June and Gull lakes, with flies and red salmon eggs producing best results. Rush Creek fishing good, with most methods and baits working. Several limits.

BRIDGEPORT AREA--Bridgeport Reservoir: Trout to about two pounds biting in shallow water on nightcrawlers and Power Bait. Algae bloom making for slow trolling.
