THE SIDELINES : ‘Oil Can’ Boyd Starts Comeback Bid

Right-hander Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd, disabled by a blood-clotting problem in his right arm since May 2, began a comeback bid Tuesday at Fenway Park.

Boyd, 29, donned a Red Sox uniform and threw for about seven minutes in the bullpen before Boston’s afternoon game with Baltimore.

“I want to pitch again, and I want to pitch here,” Boyd said. “Tell the manager I’ll be back.”

Boyd, who has missed most of the last three seasons because of the blood-clotting problem, threw lightly.

“It’s going to take a while,” Boston General Manager Lou Gorman said. “He’s anxious to get going, but it will be two or three weeks before he can pitch in a simulated game. If everything is OK then, he’ll go to Pawtucket (International League) on a rehabilitation program.”

Dr. Arthur Pappas, the team physician, said Boyd “is taking a new medication, and blood clotting shouldn’t be a problem, but we won’t know until he throws hard again.”
