Images from the Voyager 2 spacecraft revealed three previously unknown moons circling Neptune, scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena announced today.

The discoveries, in addition to a moon spotted by Voyager 2 last month, bring to six the number of satellites known to be orbiting the blue planet, laboratory officials said.

Voyager was more than 22 million miles from Neptune when the moons were confirmed by scientists Wednesday, indicating there may be many more discoveries as the space probe draws even closer in coming weeks.
