Gene Upshaw, head of the National Football League Players Assn., said that the union has completed independent drug testing of players from all 28 teams, a task designed to protect the participants from “inaccuracies and breach of confidentiality.”

Upshaw said the tests were conducted on the same day that each team administered its regular drug test, as required by the league.

Upshaw said the second drug tests will be sent to a certified lab at the University of Utah as a check against the league’s results.
