Ford Aerospace, the Newport Beach defense contractor, has been awarded a $71-million Air Force contract to modernize command and control centers at the nation’s missile launch sites.
A Ford Aerospace official said the four-year contract “is a key program in the corporation’s development and expansion into new areas of command and control in support of critical Defense Department missions.”
Under the Rapid Execution and Combat Targeting program, Ford Aerospace will improve and upgrade the Strategic Air Command’s missile launch control centers. Some of the work will be developing improved computer and display systems.
Susan Pearce, a Ford Aerospace spokeswoman, said the contract was an important one for the company’s command, control and communications business. “We have a lot of experience in command and control in the tactical (short-range) weapons area, but this is a new area supporting critical strategic (long-range) systems.”
The work will be performed by a Ford Aerospace division in Colorado Springs.
