Sylmar Woman Dies in Jump From Truck That Lost Brakes
A Sylmar woman who jumped from a moving catering truck Tuesday after its brakes failed was crushed to death by the truck’s rear wheels seconds before it crashed into two mobile homes in Canyon Country, injuring the woman’s sister, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The mobile homes were apparently unoccupied at the time of the 10:40 a.m. accident, Deputy Bruce Sonnenblick said.
Lina Borbon, 28, who was driving the truck, was pronounced dead at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital shortly after the accident at Soledad Canyon Road and Shangri-La Drive, Sonnenblick said.
Her sister, Marisol Borbon, 26, of Sylmar, was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released, he said.
Marisol Borbon told investigators the brakes failed as the truck descended a steep grade on Shangri-La Drive and ran a stop sign at Soledad Canyon Road. It crashed into the mobile homes across the street in the Granada Villa Mobile Home Park at about 70 m.p.h., sheriff’s deputies said. One of the homes was pushed about 10 inches off its support blocks, he said, and the other sustained minor damage.
An estimate of the damage was not available.
Authorities said the sisters were leaving a construction site on Shangri-La Drive and were headed to another catering job when the accident occurred.
Sonnenblick said investigators were unable to confirm that the truck’s brakes had failed. An inspection of the truck was scheduled for today.
