VIDEO CHARTS : ‘Dangerous’ Can’t Liaise With Top Spot

“Dangerous Liaisons,” No. 5 on the Billboard magazine rental chart last week, didn’t budge this week. Maybe in the next few weeks, when some of those four comedies at the top of the chart finally lose steam, this costume drama might move up. “True Believer,” a thriller starring James Woods, raced up the rental chart to No. 13 in just two weeks. Another rapid-riser is the John Candy comedy “Who’s Harry Crumb” (No. 14). “Heathers,” the teen black comedy, debuted at No. 30. Though it grossed only $1.1 million, it could be a rental market sleeper--with star Winona Ryder, who’s hot with the in-crowd, as the big lure.
* Look for “Mississippi Burning,” which debuted at No. 10, to be a huge rental hit. Starring Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe as FBI agents searching for missing civil rights workers in the early ‘60s, this action-drama grossed a respectable $34.7 million. However, it should fare much better in the rental market than the average movie grossing in that range. The Oscar nominations, including best picture and best actor (Gene Hackman), increased awareness of the movie, as did the controversy: Some charged that director Alan Parker frequently sacrificed historical accuracy in order to make his melodrama more exciting.
