An illegal alien was struck by a car late Tuesday as he tried to run across Interstate 805 near the Mexican border, officials said Wednesday.
The man is the seventh illegal alien to be injured this year while trying to cross a San Diego freeway. At least 14 have been killed in such accidents since January, the California Highway Patrol said.
The unidentified man attempted to cross I-805 south of San Ysidro Boulevard about 8:30 p.m. when he was hit, Officer Larry Urban said. The man was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.
The driver of the car that struck the man was not cited.
The surge in accidents near the border prompted the posting of signs that warn drivers of pedestrians running across the lanes, Urban said, adding that Caltrans is clearing roadside brush where illegal aliens often hide before bolting across freeways.
