The San Francisco Fire Department swore in 18 new lieutenants, including Anne M. Young, the department’s first woman officer. Young, 28, was one of the first seven women to become firefighters in San Francisco in 1987. Previously, she served two years as a firefighter in Daly City. Young was hired under the provisions of a court order ending years of discrimination in San Francisco fire houses. Until the case was settled, the department was 100% male and 85% white.
