A powerful bomb exploded Wednesday aboard a government-owned bus in the northern India state of Haryana, killing at least 18 people and seriously wounding 30 others, police said.

Police in Chandigarh, the joint capital of Haryana and neighboring Punjab state, said the device detonated as the Haryana Roadways bus approached a lakeside rest stop in Karnal, about 60 miles to the south.

There was no word on responsibility for the bombing, but Sikh extremists fighting for independence in largely Sikh Punjab state often have carried their campaign into predominantly Hindu Haryana state.
