Cheatwood said he got to the course about 8 p.m. He had played the first hole and was on his way to the second when he heard the group approaching. Cheatwood put the ball on the tee, and one man took the club out of his hands and hit Cheatwood in the mouth with the club. Cheatwood fell, got up and ran away, but the group caught him and continued to beat him.

He said the beating changed his mind about trying to become good at the game. “You can count on it,” he said. “I won’t play golf, period.”
