For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen:

* Hibiscus will bloom longer if you use an acid-type fertilizer on a regular basis.

* If your Shasta daisy flowers are smaller than they were last year, divide the crowded clumps; this should be done every two years.

* Check your vegetable garden for pests and use the proper controls as soon as possible.

* Cut off runners from strawberry plants before they root and create a tangled mass of plants.
