Two San Diego police officers shot and critically wounded an unidentified man in a Sunday afternoon shoot-out, according to a police spokesman.

The officers had spotted the man brandishing a shotgun near the corner of 47th and Market streets about 3:53 p.m., said San Diego police spokesman David Cohen. When they approached the man on a nearby lot, he turned and fired, missing both patrolmen, Cohen said.

Officers Eric Hayes, 24, and Randy Burgess, 27, returned fire with six shots, Cohen said. One bullet struck the man’s neck and two more hit his chest, said Mercy Hospital spokeswoman Debbie Seitz.

The man underwent surgery Sunday evening and was listed in critical condition, Seitz said.

Hayes and Burgess are both three-year veterans of the police force.
