About 46,000 union employees of 53 private hospitals throughout the city were prepared to begin a three-day strike at 6 a.m. today. The workers have been without a contract since June 30, union officials said.

Local 1199 of the Drug, Hospital and Health Care Employees Union on Saturday rejected the League of Voluntary Hospitals’ most recent offer in the federally mediated negotiations. A spokesman for management said the league had offered to raise wages and upgrade medical insurance.
