Jetliner Halts Takeoff After Engine Falls Apart
A Continental Airlines 727 was forced Sunday to abort its takeoff in Denver when the tail engine disintegrated, scattering pieces of metal and rotor blades on the runway, officials said.
The pilot of Flight 1249 to Portland, Ore., reported “a flameout” at 1:33 p.m. and was forced to return to the gate, said Richard Boulware, spokesman at Stapleton International Airport. He said there were no injuries reported among the 128 passengers and seven crew members.
An initial examination of the Boeing 727’s No. 2 engine showed an apparent failure in the turbine section, said Continental spokesman Ned Walker in Houston.
Airport workers “discovered a substantial number of rotor blades and scrap metal on the runway,” Boulware said.
