From Times wire services

Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu won a victory today over Japan’s recently emboldened press when the newspaper that started a rumor that Kaifu had fathered an illegitimate child retracted the claim with a full apology.

“We would like to make an apology to the party concerned for the troubles we caused by our inappropriate expressions on the report concerning Mr. Toshiki Kaifu,” the Nagoya Times said in a front-page retraction. Kaifu took office last Wednesday from Sousuke Uno, who was hounded from the premiership after only 68 days, in part over allegations that he paid for sex from geishas.
