Peruvian miners began an indefinite strike for wider wage bargaining rights, hitting major producers in the country’s vital copper mining industry and adding to a wave of labor strife facing President Alan Garcia’s government. Public health service doctors, bank clerks and construction workers are also on strike. Small, private mines reported the strike’s impact to be minimal, but the giant Toquepala and Cuajone mines, which account for about two-thirds of Peru’s copper output, showed 80% absenteeism in the walkout’s first hours, according to the mines’ owner, Southern Peru Copper Corp.
