NATION : Hance to Run for Tex. Governor
Former Rep. Kent Hance, a one-time Democrat who beat President Bush’s son for Congress in 1978, today launched a bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.
Hance cited his experience as a state senator, congressman and railroad commissioner. “I am the one candidate who does not need on-the-job training. As your governor, I will lead from day one,” he said.
Hance’s Republican rivals include Midland oilman Clayton Williams and former Secretary of State Jack Rains of Houston. On the Democratic side, state Treasurer Ann Richards is the only announced candidate.
Hance entered Congress by defeating George W. Bush and in 1981 was one of the “boll weevil” Democrats who backed President Reagan’s income tax cut.
