A Canadian bobsledder managed to beat a doping test, despite having admitted to a national team coach that he was taking anabolic steroids, a government inquiry into drug use in sports heard.

Andy Swim, a member of Canada’s bobsled team from 1984 to 1988, testified that he began using Dianabol, in the summer of 1985 to accelerate his recovery from a wrist injury. After learning there would be drug testing at an August training camp, Swim admitted his use to one of the team’s coaches, Joseph Kilburn.

Kilburn refused to help Swim circumvent the testing, but the coach apparently never told anyone else of their discussion.

Swim said he took diuretics to flush the drugs from his system.
