An opinion poll has thrust the issue of Quebec independence back into the Canadian political arena, although separatism was rejected by Quebec in a referendum nearly a decade ago. The Gallup Poll indicated that 28% of Canadians believe French-speaking Quebec should become an independent country. According to Gallup, it was the strongest support for separatism nationally since the company’s pollsters first asked the question more than 20 years ago. Perhaps the most startling finding of the poll of 1,034 Canadians was that 27% of English-speaking Canadians and 36% of French-speaking Canadians favored Quebec’s becoming a separate nation.
