At least 77 people were injured in rioting and disturbances on the 42nd anniversary of India’s independence, and Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi warned that divisive forces are rising in the country. Bomb blasts and rioting struck the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, with at least 50 people injured, while police opened fire and lobbed tear-gas shells to quell riots in Calcutta, Indian news agencies reported. In Srinagar, summer capital of predominantly Muslim Kashmir, there were sporadic outbursts of violence after separatists called for a 24-hour general strike.
