From Times wire services

Singapore Airlines has banned the use of tinted contact lenses for its flight attendants, claiming that an Asian with blue eyes contradicts the company’s advertising image, officials said today.

An airline spokesman said the national carrier was banning colored lenses for its stewards and stewardesses “for safety reasons” but added the lenses did not jibe with the dark-eyed Oriental stewardess portrayed in its “Singapore Girl” advertising.

“We won’t deny that this was a consideration, but it was not the main reason,” the spokesman said in explaining the ban.

The airline fears that cosmetic contact lenses will lead to an increased number of eye infections.
