Film Suffers Loss of “Star”--a Ford Pinto

Producer Greg Dante was entering the home stretch of shooting in Pomona on “Boom Box,” a film aimed at promoting sound values among Latino youngsters, when one of his stars disappeared.

The “star” is a 1970 customized Ford Pinto station wagon--a pink, low-riding machine that has been used in several key scenes, Dante said.

He said the car was stolen Saturday in Pomona and is still missing. If the car is returned, he said, no charges will be pressed.

“That car is to us what the Batmobile is to ‘Batman,’ ” said Dante, of Fullerton. “We can’t shoot the final scene without that car.”

“Boom Box” uses music to educate young people about the dangers of “promiscuous living--specifically venereal diseases and AIDS,” Dante said.

Without the car the entire project is in jeopardy, Dante said. The film has a $100,000 “cash budget,” plus another $150,000 in volunteered services and donated equipment, he said.

“We don’t have the money to get another car like this,” Dante said. “We don’t even know where to find one.”
