Program Tonight Launches La Jolla’s SummerFest ’89

The La Jolla Chamber Music Society’s SummerFest ’89 opens tonight with an 8 p.m. concert of a Telemann Trio Sonata (featuring San Diego Symphony principal flute Damian Bursill-Hall), Benjamin Britten’s “Phantasy Quartet,” Op. 2, and the Brahms B-flat String Sextet, with violinists Andres Cardenes and Julie Rosenfeld. Saturday’s program features Mozart’s String Quartet No. 17, played by the Colorado Quartet, Dvorak’s Terzetto, Op. 74, and the Brahms Horn Trion, with hornist Richard Todd.

The Sunday evening benefit concert will present Russian pianist Yefim Bronfman in the Brahms F Minor Piano Quintet, a performance of the Debussy Cello Sonata with cellist Gary Hoffman and Mel Powell’s String Quartet played by the Colorado Quartet.

The Aug. 22 concert includes Beethoven’s Sonata for Cello and Piano, Prokofiev’s G Minor Quintet, Op. 39, and Shostakovich’s E Minor Piano Trio. On Aug. 25, Hindemith’s celebrated wind quintet, “Kleine Kammermusik,” Op. 24, No. 2, will be performed with the Beethoven Piano Trio, Op. 70, No. 2, and the Ravel String Quartet. Leoffler’s “Rhapsodies for Oboe, Viola and Piano” will commence the Aug. 26 concert, which also includes Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” Sonata and the Elgar A Minor Piano Quintet. The final concert on Sunday, Aug. 27, will feature Schubert’s mighty Octet in F Major and Brahms’ Piano Quartet in C Minor.

All evening concerts are presented in the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art’s Sherwood Auditorium at 8 p.m. On Sunday afternoon, Aug. 27, a young people’s concert including Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” will be performed at 2 p.m. This program will be followed by an ice cream fest in the museum courtyard.
