Conservation organizations sued in state court in Anchorage to force Exxon to put up money for a multibillion-dollar trust fund to restore the Alaska lands and waters defiled by the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Lawyer Arthur Bryant, who filed the suit for the National Wildlife Federation, the Wildlife Federation of Alaska and the Natural Resources Defense Council, said it was unique because it does not seek money for economic losses: “The sole purpose of the lawsuit is to force Exxon, Alyeska and the other defendants to restore the environment to the condition it would have been in if there was no oil spill.”
