Dozens of people were detained in Prague in a security sweep designed to thwart protests marking the 21st anniversary of the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. More than 30 people were taken away from central Wenceslas Square after they assembled for a silent march to press demands for political reforms. Many of the nation’s leading dissidents went into hiding to avoid arrest, and others left Prague after being warned to do so by the authorities. Warsaw Pact troops from the Soviet Union, Hungary, Poland, East Germany and Bulgaria entered Czechoslovakia on the night of Aug. 20-21, 1968, to crush the “Prague Spring” reform movement.
