From United Press International
TOKYO —
Two boats carrying 257 Vietnamese refugees were headed for Japan on Monday, prompting local officials for the first time to ask the government for financial aid to accommodate the biggest influx ever of “boat people” from Vietnam.
The refugees were found in the East China Sea aboard two small ships heading for southern Japan, maritime officials said.
Their arrival will raise the total number of Vietnamese refugees coming to Japan this year to 1,841, the Justice Ministry said.
