All of the six active candidates seeking the 15th Congressional District seat formerly held by former House majority whip Tony Coelho in the San Joaquin Valley have agreed to refuse honorariums and to back comprehensive campaign finance reform legislation if elected, according to Common Cause. Jay Hedlund, a Merced official of the citizens lobbying group, said three Republican candidates returned questionnaires indicating their support of campaign reforms, while their three Democratic opponents have promised to support the same reforms. A special election is scheduled for Sept. 12. Coelho resigned in June after charges surfaced that he had failed to report a $50,000 loan obtained through a saving and loan executive, who arranged a junk bond deal for Coelho.
