Almost 10% of all trucks and buses flunked inspection on the first day of a three-day safety crackdown in California, the Highway Patrol reported. Inspectors found faulty brakes, cracked wheels, malfunctioning steering systems and other mechanical problems at check points set up on California 58 in the Mojave Desert, Interstate 5 in Shasta County, I-80 in Truckee and I-10 in Banning. The CHP ordered 218 vehicles off the road and suspended the operating licenses of 58 drivers.
