Glendora : Council Sells Surplus Land

Share

The Glendora City Council voted 3 to 2 Tuesday to approve the sale of nine acres of “landlocked” surplus property owned by the city to a developer who plans to build a 60-home development there.

Critics of the sale said that it was a giveaway to developer Johnny Johnson, owner of the Azusa Green Country Club.

The price of $126,000 an acre is far below prices of comparable lots recently sold by nearby cities, said resident Barbara Mee, a critic of the deal. Johnson said the price is low because the property, which is in the city of Azusa, does not directly front on any street.

In addition to the $1.1-million sales price, Johnson must pay for $1 million in improvements on city water facilities on the property and give the city a storm drain easement and the right to drill a new well there, said City Manager Art Cook. The property is in the middle of the San Gabriel Water Basin.
