Tallest Ponderosa Pine Felled in Idaho
A nine-foot-diameter tree, believed to be the world’s tallest Ponderosa pine, has been cut down in a central Idaho forest, producing a 112-foot log.
The pine, which died three years ago, was more than 500 years old.
Sections of the trunk, with historical dates marked on its growth rings, will go to parks in Boise, Donnelly and Pocatello, Ida., and a botanical garden in Dortmund, West Germany, officials said.
About 100 people watched Wednesday when Claude and John Fields, brothers and professional loggers, took about 75 minutes to drop the tree to the ground, using a special saw with a six-foot blade.
