SportScope : North Student Wins Judo Title

Richard Rose of Torrance won the high school division of the Canadian National Judo Exhibition last week and placed third in the senior men’s division of the international tournament, losing to the two finalists, who were considerably older. Rose, 17, a student at North High, will compete in a U.S. national tournament in Houston in three weeks.

Deborah Kory of Rolling Hills Estates recently won two national titles at the U.S. Junior National Long Course Swimming Championships at Austin, Tex. The 15-year-old, swimming for the San Pedro-Peninsula YMCA, won the 100-meter and 200-meter breast stroke. Her time of 2:38.78 in the 200 set a junior national record, while her 1:13.93 in the 100 missed the record by .04 seconds. Both times would have qualified for Olympic trials. Kory placed 16th in the 200-meter individual medley. Another South Bay entry, Claudine Martinez, 16, of Carson competed in four events and swam a personal-best of 17:51.43 in the 1,500-meter freestyle.

Rogers Park in Inglewood is holding registration for its annual men’s 6-foot-2 and under fall basketball league. Team entry fee is $350. League play begins Oct. 7. For information, call Allen Neal at Rogers Park, 412-5504, 2 to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Raul Revilla of Lomita scored a hole in one on the 145-yard par three eighth hole at Harbor Park with a seven-iron.
